Wide areas of Okinawa and Kagoshima prefectures recorded an intensity of 2 or 1.
Japan's Meteorological Agency says the focus of the temblor was about 270 kilometers east-southeast of Ishigaki Island and 10 kilometers deep.
Officials say there is no tsunami threat, although there may be some changes in sea levels of up to about 20 centimeters in waters surrounding the Okinawa main island region and the Daitojima, Miyakojima and Yaeyama regions for the next few hours.
