Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg had some harsh words Friday for leaders at the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow. She accused them of only pretending to take action.
Greta Thunberg said, "The COP has start turning into a PR event where leaders are giving beautiful speeches and announcing fancy commitments and targets while behind the curtains, a two-week long celebration of business as usual and blah blah blah."
Local media say thousands of young people took to the streets on what conference organizers had labeled "Youth Day". The protestors warned that it's a choice between action and extinction.
The focus at COP26 is whether delegates can agree on plans that would keep the average rise in global temperatures under 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Negotiations go into full swing next week when ministerial-level talks begin.
