The Japan Skating Federation says figure skater Hanyu Yuzuru will not participate in the upcoming NHK Trophy competition due to a right ankle ligament injury.
The federation announced the two-time Olympic gold medalist's absence on Thursday.
The NHK Trophy, scheduled to open on November 12 in Tokyo, was Hanyu's first competition of the season ahead of next year's Beijing Olympics.
In a statement, Hanyu expressed disappointment over getting injured due to a fall. But he said he'll try to learn something from the experience, work hard to control his pain and rehabilitate on the ice to make a strong comeback.
Hanyu also thanked his supporters, saying he's encouraged by their unwavering support and will do his best to improve.
