Yahoo withdraws from China

US firm Yahoo has become the latest foreign tech giant to pull out of China.

The company said on Tuesday that its services, including a weather app and tech blog, were no longer accessible from mainland China as of November 1.

It cited an increasingly challenging business and legal environment in the country.

Just last month, Microsoft subsidiary LinkedIn said it would be shutting down its social networking site in China later this year.

China is an appealing market for tech giants, with an estimated one billion Internet users. Online shopping and cashless payment services are widely used.

But the government is tightening its control over tech firms. A new law took effect on Monday, requiring firms that gather large volumes of data to protect user privacy.
