Fire leaves at least 46 dead in Taiwan

Taiwan authorities say a fire engulfed a 13-story commercial and residential building in the southern city of Kaohsiung early Thursday morning.

Local fire officials say at least 46 people, including residents, have been confirmed dead and 41 others injured.

Media reports say the building is about 40 years old with shops on its lower levels and apartments above. Most of the commercial space was apparently vacant.

Video footage shows fire engines dispatched to the scene and firefighters spraying water at the building or searching the floors for survivors on a crane vehicle.

Authorities say the blaze has been put out, but that the death toll could rise.

They're trying to find the source of the fire while continuing search-and-rescue efforts.
