Thailand lashed by monsoon rains

Thailand's seasonal monsoon continues to pummel large areas of the country. Flash flooding since last month has devastated about a third of the provinces.

Disaster officials say more than 300,000 families have been affected. Nine people have been confirmed dead.
A flood caused by a severe storm in September continues to disrupt life in 17 provinces.

Many houses and roads have been inundated, especially in the northeast. People have been forced to evacuate.

Pigs were swept away at a farm in Khon Kaen province earlier this week. Farmers have asked the local government to relocate about 1,000 of them to drier ground.

Authorities have ordered that flood defenses be strengthened with gates and water pumps.
Weather officials forecast more heavy rain over the coming week, and are warning people to brace for flash floods and landslides.
