Gym opens for people stranded after quake

Officials of Tokyo's Adachi Ward opened a public school gymnasium overnight for people who were unable to return home after a magnitude 5.9 earthquake halted some train services on Thursday.

The earthquake struck near Tokyo late on Thursday. It registered an intensity of five-plus in the ward.

Adachi Ward officials opened the gym of a local elementary school near Kitasenju Station at around 2:30 a.m. on Friday so stranded people could stay there until morning.

More than 30 people came to the gym within its first hour of opening. They included train passengers who had learned about the gym's temporary opening on social media. People were seen resting on mattresses with blankets provided by local officials.
