People reportedly trapped in elevators after quake

The strong earthquake struck greater Tokyo late on Thursday halted elevators across the capital's metropolitan area. Some people were reportedly trapped between floors.

An elevator service company in central Tokyo said forty elevators it manages in Tokyo and Chiba Prefecture had made emergency stops after the quake. It said it was checking to make sure no people were stuck.

Some people posted messages on the social media, saying they were trapped in elevators.

All elevators at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building in Shinjuku also stopped. Many officials were seen walking up and down the stairs in the skyscraper.
