US trade representative to resume talks with China

US Trade Representative Katherine Tai is expected to resume ministerial talks with China soon.

Senior US administration officials told reporters on Sunday that Tai will hold a virtual meeting with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He to discuss China's failure to keep promises made in a trade deal reached under former president Donald Trump.

The Biden administration has reviewed the "Phase One" deal struck in January last year in an effort to formulate a new trade strategy toward China.

The deal called for correcting structural problems with China including excessive subsidies and intellectual property rights violations.

The new strategy announced on Monday acknowledges certain results but concludes the deal is insufficient to resolve such problems.

One of the officials said the objective of the administration is not to escalate trade tensions with China and stressed the importance of dialogue.
