East Japan Railway says it will suspend train services on some lines in Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures near Tokyo from Friday morning due to an approaching typhoon.
Weather officials are forecasting strong winds and heavy rain for coastal areas in the Kanto region as Typhoon Mindulle travels on the sea south of the Japanese archipelago.
JR East officials say services will resume after the storm has passed and they can confirm safety of operations.
Other public and private railway operators in Tokyo and surrounding areas have no plans to suspend services for now.
But they are calling on people to stay updated by checking the operators' websites, as stormy weather could cause delays or cancellation of services.
