Komuro Kei, the boyfriend of Japan's Princess Mako, has departed from the United States and is on his way back to Japan. It will be his first homecoming in three years.
Arrangements are being made for his marriage to Princess Mako, the eldest daughter of Crown Prince and Princess Akishino.
Komuro appeared at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on Sunday.
Sporting a ponytail and wearing a suit without a necktie, he bowed to reporters and boarded a direct flight to Japan.
The flight is scheduled to arrive at Narita Airport near Tokyo on Monday afternoon, Japan time.
This will be Komuro's first visit since he moved to the United States in August 2018. He went there to study at a law school and to obtain a license to practice law in New York State.
Komuro is expected to reunite with Princess Mako for the first time in three years, after he spends 14 days in coronavirus quarantine.
They may get married in October. The Imperial Household Agency is expected to make an official announcement soon.
