Japan welcomes Taiwan's application to join CPTPP

Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu says Japan welcomes Taiwan's application to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, or CPTPP.

A spokesperson for Taiwan's Cabinet announced the application on Wednesday. Motegi spoke to reporters during his visit to New York.

He said Taiwan is an extremely important partner for Japan, sharing basic values such as freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

Motegi said he is aware that Taiwan has made public efforts toward applying to join the pact.

The foreign minister said the CPTPP needs to examine whether Taiwan is prepared to fully meet its strict criteria.

He added that Japan will take into account strategic perspectives and public understanding in responding to the application.
