Chinese paper slams Taiwan's bid to join CPTPP

A newspaper affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party has reported Taiwan's bid to join the CPTPP trade pact with a breaking news headline saying it is designed to "make trouble" for China.

In its Chinese-language online edition on Wednesday, Global Times quoted an article by a Taiwanese news agency on Taiwan's formal application for membership of the trade deal.

Beijing maintains Taiwan is a part of China under the One China principle.

Earlier this month, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin spoke at a news conference about the possibility that Taiwan would join the CPTPP.

He said that if Taiwan participates in regional economic cooperation, China will have to deal with the issue based on the One China principle.
