Japan positive about Taiwan's bid to join CPTPP

A senior official at Japan's Foreign Ministry has responded positively to news that Taiwan has formally applied to join the CPTPP trade pact.

The official told NHK that Taiwan has a market economy, and that in light of its achievements in the World Trade Organization and other international forums, it is hoped that Taiwan will be able to meet the strict criteria for joining the trade deal.

The official said the ministry sees it as a positive thing that Taiwan, which shares common values with Japan, has made a formal application to join the accord.
