US President Joe Biden has announced a plan to require businesses with 100 or more employees to ensure their workers get vaccinated against the coronavirus or show a negative test result at least once a week.
Biden on Thursday outlined the new measure that could cover about 80 million workers.
A senior administration official says employers who do not comply could face fines of up to 14,000 dollars per violation.
The United States has recently see a surge in COVID-19 cases from the fast-spreading Delta variant. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the number of daily fatalities surpassed 1,600 on Wednesday.
Biden said getting vaccinated is not about "freedom or personal choice," but about "protecting yourself and those around you."
Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel says the RNC plans to sue the Biden administration over the mandate, which she called "unconstitutional and authoritarian."
