Japan's defense minister and the new commander of US forces in Japan have confirmed that they will work to further bolster the Japan-US alliance.
Kishi Nobuo met with Lieutenant General Ricky Rupp for about 30 minutes on Thursday at the Defense Ministry in Tokyo. Rupp took up the post on August 27.
Kishi first offered his condolences to the families of the US service members who were killed in the terrorist attack at Kabul airport last month.
Kishi said he hopes to quickly build a trustful relationship with Rupp and work with him to strengthen the bilateral alliance.
Rupp said he looks forward to building on the trust that his predecessors have established before him.
Kishi and Rupp also discussed China's increased maritime activities and promoting cooperation between Japan's Self-Defense Forces and the US military.
