Tokyo confirms 1,629 new COVID cases, 16 dead

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 1,629 new cases of coronavirus infection on Tuesday.

The figure is down 1,280 from the previous Tuesday, marking the 16th consecutive day of week-on-week decline.

The seven-day average through Tuesday stood at 2,231, or 63.4 percent of the figure for the week before. This is the 14th day in row the average seven-day tally has been down.

The cumulative number of confirmed cases in the capital now stands at 359,192.

Tokyo officials say 260 people were seriously ill as of Tuesday, judged on the basis of Metropolitan Government criteria, down 7 from Monday.

They say 16 people died from the virus on Tuesday, bringing the total death toll for the metropolis to 2,577.
