Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force has reported more than 50 new cases of the coronavirus at a camp in the western prefecture of Shiga. This brings the total number of personnel confirmed to have been infected there to 187.
Infections at Camp Otsu have spread since the first case was detected on August 23.
As of last Wednesday, 135 personnel had been reported to have gotten the virus.
Another 52 members were confirmed infected between Thursday and Sunday.
The GSDF says the 187 infected individuals belong to an education unit and are all residents of one of the three dormitories at the camp.
It says nine of the infected members had received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine.
The GSDF is now considering prioritizing vaccinations for education unit members across the country, as many of them share rooms at dormitories.
It says it will work with the local public health center in tracing the route of infection. It also pledged efforts to identify close contacts and bolster anti-infection measures.
