Kitano Takeshi's car attacked by man with weapon

A man carrying what appears to be a pickax has been arrested after attacking a car of actor and film director Kitano Takeshi in Tokyo. Kitano and his chauffer were not injured.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police say Kitano, whose stage name is Beat Takeshi, was in the car at 11:40 p.m. Saturday Japan time in the compound of television network TBS.

A security guard called police. The assailant, who is believed to be in his 40s, was arrested there on suspicion of possessing illegal weapons.

Kitano's car had just left a parking lot following his appearance in an infotainment program.

Kitano is 74 years old. He has been active as comic artist, actor, writer, and film director. He won various awards and medals for his films. His accolades include the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for "Hana-Bi" in 1997.
