Japanese tennis star Osaka Naomi says she will take a break for a while after she suffered a defeat in a third round match of the US Open, failing to defend her Grand Slam title.
The two-time US Open champion lost in New York on Friday to 18-year-old Leylah Fernandez from Canada, who is ranked 73rd.
Osaka took the first set 7-5 with powerful strokes.
But she lost the second set 6-7 as Fernandez fought back and rallied to eventually win in a tiebreak.
Osaka showed her frustration after she made a number of errors in the third set, prompting a warning from an umpire.
She lost the third set 4-6, ending her US Open title defense.
Osaka broke into tears as she spoke to reporters after the match.
She said that recently, when she wins, she doesn't feel happy but instead feels more relief, and when she loses, she feels very sad. She said that she does not think that is normal.
She added, "Honestly, I don't know when I'm going to play my next tennis match. I think I'm going to take a break from playing for a while."
