SDF plane returns home from Afghan mission

One of the Self-Defense Forces aircraft that were sent to evacuate people from Afghanistan has returned to Japan.

The C2 transport plane arrived at Iruma Air Base near Tokyo at around 9:30 a.m. on Friday.

The Japanese government sent three SDF planes on the mission, which ferried one Japanese woman from Afghanistan to Islamabad in neighboring Pakistan. The aircraft also flew 14 Afghans out of their country at the request of the United States.

Japan planned to evacuate Afghan staff members working for the country's embassy and international organizations in Afghanistan. But none of them were evacuated.

The other two transport planes left Islamabad for Japan where they are scheduled to arrive as early as Friday.

The returned SDF personnel will undergo coronavirus tests and will remain in quarantine for two weeks.
