Japan reports record serious cases of coronavirus

Japan's health ministry says the number of seriously ill coronavirus patients using ventilators and receiving intensive care treatment was 2,158 nationwide on Thursday.

The number is the largest to date, 48 more than the previous record set on Tuesday.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says it confirmed 3,099 new cases of the coronavirus in the capital on Thursday.

The daily tally has marked a week-on-week decline for the 11th consecutive day.

The seven-day average through Thursday in Tokyo is 3,140, or 72.1 percent of the figure a week ago. This is a decline from the previous week for nine days in a row.

The cumulative number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the capital now stands at 349,841.

Officials say 291 people are seriously ill in the capital, up five from Wednesday.

They also say 10 people died from the virus in Tokyo on Thursday, bringing the total to 2,510.
