The World Health Organization has launched a new hub in Berlin to gather and analyze information on pandemics and other health emergencies.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and German Chancellor Angela Merkel attended the ceremony in the German capital on Wednesday to inaugurate the new WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence.
The new hub has received an initial investment of 100 million dollars from Germany.
Tedros praised Germany for supporting the WHO-led frameworks to develop drugs and vaccines for the coronavirus from the early stages of the pandemic.
He said, "With the right information, countries and communities can stay ahead of emerging risks, and save lives."
The new hub will promote collaboration on gathering data to detect and assess epidemic and pandemic risks.
Merkel said the information gathered by the new hub should be shared with all countries.
Tedros says he wants to create a system for countries to quickly share and analyze information on infectious diseases after they failed to take a coordinated response to the coronavirus outbreak.
