Kabul airport after US withdrawal

Foreign media are reporting on the situation at the Kabul international airport immediately after the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.

Video footage taken by AFP news agency on Tuesday shows Taliban fighters holding a white flag and lining up for photographs on the airport grounds.

The footage also shows helicopters in a hangar with their cockpits destroyed and huge holes in their bodies.

Reuters say US troops apparently destroyed more than 70 aircraft at the airport before leaving.

A senior Taliban leader said in an interview that the airport is a symbol of the country's sovereignty, and that the Taliban hoped the aircraft would not be destroyed.

He said that unfortunately the aircraft and most facilities at the airport were destroyed, and that the Taliban will restore its operations to serve the country's interests.
