Kerry visiting China to discuss climate change

US special envoy for climate John Kerry is visiting China, apparently to seek common ground between the two countries ahead of COP26, the UN climate conference to be held in November in Britain.

The US and China on Tuesday announced that Kerry will stay in Tianjin through Friday. He is expected to discuss climate change with his Chinese counterpart Xie Zhenhua starting from Wednesday.

NHK reporters have confirmed that what is believed to be Kerry's convoy entered a hotel compound in Tianjin on Tuesday night.

Kerry is visiting China for the second time since President Joe Biden took office.

Kerry and Xie issued a joint statement after their talks in April. They said the two countries will continue to discuss issues such as increased use of renewable energy and goals for reducing carbon emissions.
