Kato: Govt. working on plans for Afghanistan

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Kato Katsunobu praised the United States' efforts in Afghanistan and said it is of utmost importance to evacuate those who want to leave the country.

Kato told reporters on Tuesday it is crucial for the Taliban to cut ties with terrorist groups. He stressed the need for the international community, including Afghanistan's neighbors, to work together to put pressure on the Taliban.

Kato also said the evacuation of those who want to leave Afghanistan remains a top priority.

He said the government will continue to do its best to ensure the safety and assist the evacuation of Japanese nationals in the country, as well as Afghan staffers at the Japanese Embassy and the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

He added that the government is considering specific measures, including the use of Self-Defense Forces aircraft, while keeping an eye on developments there.
