Serious COVID-19 cases in Tokyo hit record high

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says it confirmed 3,581 new cases of coronavirus infection on Saturday.

The daily tally is down 1,493 from a week ago, marking a week-on-week decline for the sixth day in a row.

Tokyo officials said the number of COVID-19 patients in serious condition in the capital hit a new high of 297, up three from the previous record marked on Friday.

They also said 19 people infected with the virus died, the highest number for a single day during the fifth wave of infections.
