Algeria cuts diplomatic ties with Morocco

Algeria has cut off diplomatic ties with Morocco, alleging hostile actions by its neighbor.

The two countries have long been at odds over Western Sahara, which is controlled by Morocco.

Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra, speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, accused Morocco of constant hostility since Algeria's independence.

Lamamra cited Morocco's use of spyware against Algerian officials to steal information from their smartphones. He also accused Morocco of involvement in wildfires in northern Algeria.

The Moroccan Foreign Ministry called Algeria's claims unilateral and unjustified.

The secretary general of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, issued a statement expressing disappointment over Algeria's decision and urged both countries to exercise restraint.
