Tokyo begins vaccinations of police, firefighters

Police and firefighters started to receive coronavirus vaccinations on Tuesday at the site of a former food market.

Personnel from organizations including Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and Tokyo Fire Department received their first jabs at Tsukiji, in Chuo Ward. They were then monitored inside parked buses for possible adverse reactions.

The former market site is due to be used as a transportation depot during the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government can only use the area for vaccinations until the end of June, before preparations for the games gather pace.

Metropolitan officials plan to administer the first shots to 5,000 people per day, vaccinating a total of around 110,000 people.

From July, officials plan to set up prefabricated facilities at Yoyogi Park in Shibuya Ward to deliver the second shots.

One firefighter who received the jab said he was determined not to infect anyone while carrying out his duties.
