Thailand has begun the delivery of locally produced AstraZeneca vaccines ahead of a large-scale immunization drive scheduled to start next week.
Thailand's health ministry said Friday it had received the first 1.8 million AstraZeneca vaccines produced by Thai drugmaker Siam Bioscience. The company agreed with the British firm last October to manufacture its vaccine domestically.
The Thai government plans to start the rollout this month and the export of the vaccine to other Southeast Asian countries will begin in July.
Thailand has been struggling since March to contain a third wave of infections. In recent weeks, the country has been seeing two to three thousand daily cases.
The government aims to inoculate about 70 percent of the population by year end, but it has been scrambling to secure a supply of vaccines from various companies.
