Training camps for foreign teams ahead of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, as well as related cultural exchange events, have been canceled in 102 municipalities in Japan due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Across Japan, a total of 528 municipalities have registered as host towns for foreign teams.
NHK has found that about 80 percent of the 102 cancellations were requested by teams.
Some teams said they would directly enter the athletes' village in Tokyo without holding camps, due to concerns over Japan's coronavirus situation. Others cited difficulty in athletes' making last-minute adjustments while following anti-infection guidelines set by the Japanese side.
Among the municipalities, some declined to host training camps as cluster infections had been confirmed in their regions. Others cited difficulty in ensuring the safety of team members and residents amid slow progress in local vaccine rollouts.
