Mickelson wins PGA, becomes oldest major champion

American Phil Mickelson has become the oldest major champion in golf history at the age of 50 after winning the PGA Championship in the US state of South Carolina.

Mickelson ended the final day on Sunday at six under par overall to clinch his sixth major title. The previous record was held for more than half a century by Julius Boros, who won the 1968 PGA Championship when he was 48.

Matsuyama Hideki of Japan ended 23rd at one over par, failing to win two consecutive major titles. He won the Masters Tournament in April, becoming the first Japanese golfer to capture a major title on the men's tour.

Matsuyama scored four birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey on Sunday for even par. Matsuyama said he had difficulty regaining his form, and the championship ended just when he was getting better.
