Guterres welcomes Israel-Hamas truce

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas after 11 days of hostilities.

Speaking to reporters at the UN headquarters in New York on Thursday, Guterres called on all sides to observe the ceasefire.

He stressed, "Israeli and Palestinian leaders have a responsibility beyond the restoration of calm to start a serious dialogue to address the root causes of the conflicts."

The UN chief also urged the international community to help people in the Gaza Strip rebuild their lives. He said, "It will be very important to have a robust program of humanitarian aid and recovery for Gaza."
