India assesses cyclone damage

The Indian Navy is conducting search and rescue operations in the area where an off-shore drilling barge sank in a cyclone.

One hundred eighty-eight crew members have been rescued so far off the coast of Mumbai City, while 37 bodies have been recovered. The search continues for the missing 36 people.

Cyclone Tauktae made landfall in the state of Gujarat on Monday. The storm has now weakened into a tropical depression.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an aerial survey of the affected areas to assess the ongoing relief measures.
Over 16,000 houses were damaged in the state of Gujarat, and about 6000 villages suffered power blackouts.

A relief aid package totaling 136 million dollars has been announced to help those affected by the storm.
Tauktae is the second major cyclone to hit India since the onset of the pandemic last year.
