Psaki: US position on Tokyo Games 'unchanged'

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has stressed the United States' continued commitment to the Tokyo Olympics that are scheduled to start in two months.

Psaki spoke in an online news conference for overseas media on Wednesday.

She said US President Joe Biden continues to support the efforts by Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide to hold a safe and secure Olympics and Paralympics this summer.

The Biden administration outlined the same stance in the joint statement issued after the bilateral summit in April.

Psaki said, "We understand the careful considerations that the Japanese government and the International Olympic Committee are weighing as they prepare for the Tokyo Olympics." She noted that the Japanese government has stressed that public health remains the central priority as they plan for the Games.

Psaki said the US position has not changed, and they will work closely with their partners in Japan and with the US Olympic Committee as they look to the Games this summer.
