2 dead in West Bank synagogue accident

At least two Jewish worshippers have been killed and more than 150 injured after a tiered seating structure collapsed suddenly at a synagogue in the occupied West Bank.

US and European media outlets say the incident happened on Sunday. The synagogue is located in a West Bank Jewish settlement. The house of worship was under construction.

There were about 650 people in the building. They were celebrating the start of a major Jewish holiday.

Video footage shows people sitting in the upper seats suddenly falling. Those in the lower seats then slid down.

Reuters has quoted local police and firefighting officials as saying that the event was held without permission. Authorities had allegedly warned that the building was unsafe.

Last month, 45 Jewish pilgrims were crushed to death in a stampede that occurred at a religious site.
