Tokyo reports 545 new COVID-19 cases

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government confirmed 545 new cases of the coronavirus on Thursday.

This is the first time the capital's daily tally has exceeded 500 for two days in a row since the state of emergency in Tokyo ended on March 21.

The 555 cases reported on Wednesday marked the first time the daily figure had topped 500 since February 6.

Thursday's tally is up by 70 cases from a week earlier, posting a week-on-week increase for the eighth straight day.

The total number of infections in the capital now stands at 124,450.
