Osaka reports its record 878 coronavirus cases

Japan's western prefecture of Osaka reported 878 new cases of coronavirus infections on Wednesday, surpassing its daily record of 719 confirmed a day earlier.

Osaka remains the country's hotspot with a daily tally which has exceeded that of Tokyo for nine straight days.

Osaka officials also reported two deaths.

Those figures bring the prefecture's cumulative cases to 56,626, and its total deaths to 1,199.
