A Japanese company is working to develop 3D maps covering all major roads across the country for use in self-driving and driver-assistance systems.
Executives at Dynamic Map Platform say they have already established map data covering Japan's expressways and other highways.
They say they aim to complete mapping all major roads by fiscal 2024.
The venture's investors include a government-backed fund and Japanese automakers.
Company officials say the 3D maps are already installed in the Honda Legend, a luxury sedan equipped with advanced autonomous driving features.
