Toyota Motor's Yaris zoomed past its rivals to become Japan's top-selling vehicle in the fiscal year that ended in March.
The compact car and four of the year's other top ten sellers offer hybrid versions, as the auto sector increasingly goes electric.
Industry data shows the Yaris sold 202,652 units. Honda's N-Box mini vehicle came in second, shifting 197,900 units. Suzuki's Spacia mini model was third with 145,319.
More people have been turning to cars as they stay off public transport where possible due to the coronavirus.
Vehicles with extra safety features have been in demand.
Five of the ten top-selling models are categorized as mini vehicles, popular due to their low maintenance costs.
