FINA, the international governing body of swimming, has congratulated Japanese swimming star Ikee Rikako for qualifying for the Tokyo Games after battling leukemia.
On Sunday, FINA posted a photo of Ikee on Twitter with her fists up in the air, with a caption noting that Ikee qualified for Tokyo 2020 only seven months after her return to competition.
Ikee won the women's 100-meter butterfly final at Japan's national championships on Sunday, clearing the time required for a slot in the 400-meter medley relay.
Sarah Sjostrom, a 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic gold medalist who has jointly practiced with Ikee in the past, posted a screenshot on Instagram of news that Ikee qualified for the Tokyo event.
Sjostrom 's post on Sunday was accompanied by the word, "Amazing".
Immediately after the news that Ikee was diagnosed with leukemia, the Swedish swimmer expressed her support for her through her Instagram post.
Following the award ceremony at the 2019 World Swimming Championships, Sjostrom and fellow competitors held up their palms with the words, "Ikee Never Give Up" in a show of encouragement.
