International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has congratulated Japanese swimmer Ikee Rikako on qualifying for the Tokyo Games after battling leukemia.
Ikee won the women's 100-meter butterfly final at Japan's national championships on Sunday, clearing the time required for a slot in the 400-meter medley relay.
Bach tweeted, "Olympians never give up, congratulations to cancer survivor Rikako Ikee for qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics only two years after being diagnosed with leukemia. Can't wait to see you in Tokyo."
Ikee was diagnosed with leukemia in February 2019. She returned to competition in August last year after undergoing treatment that included a 10-month stay in hospital.
