April Fool's joke ends in clashes in Brussels

Police in Brussels have clashed with crowds who breached coronavirus restrictions and gathered in a park for an outdoor party.

About 2,000 people went to the park on Thursday after a fake message spread on social media saying there will be a party with popular DJs and singers. The message was meant as an April Fool's joke.

Police told the crowd to leave, but some of them threw objects. Officers used water cannons and tear gas in response.

A police spokesperson says some people were arrested, and both officers and partygoers were injured.

A 17-year-old woman said she and her peers were all depressed and that they came not to annoy the police but to show that they have a life to enjoy.

Brussels Mayor Philippe Close tweeted that he understands that people want to go out, but gatherings like this would not be tolerated.
