Rescuers in eastern Taiwan are struggling to reach trapped survivors of a passenger train derailment. The train, carrying about 350 people, came off the rails on Friday morning inside a tunnel in Hualien County.
Railway authorities said 36 passengers have showed no vital signs. They added that four of the eight cars were crushed.
The authorities told NHK that the train collided with a maintenance vehicle, adding that details of the accident have yet to be obtained.
President Tsai Ing-wen instructed officials to do all they can to rescue people and set up an emergency medical system to accept many injured people.
