The Tokyo Metropolitan Government confirmed 475 new cases of the coronavirus on Thursday, for the highest daily count since a state of emergency ended in the capital on March 21.
The seven-day average of new cases in Tokyo as of Thursday stood at 372.3, up 16.4 percent from a week ago.
For the 20th day in a row, the average has exceeded that of a week earlier, clearly indicating that infections have been rising again.
Among the new cases, about a quarter, or 114, were people in their 20s, followed by 93 people in their 30s, and 64 people in their 50s.
The total number of infections confirmed in Tokyo has risen to 121,461.
The number of patients in serious condition in the capital stood at 44, down one from Wednesday.
