The administration of US president Joe Biden allowed media to tour a border facility in the southern state of Texas for the first time on Tuesday.
An increasing number of migrant families and unaccompanied children have been arriving at the US southern border in recent weeks. The president is being criticized for overcrowded detention facilities operating in harsh conditions.
More than 4,000 migrants, many of them unaccompanied children, are being housed in the Texas facility, which has a capacity of 250. Footage showed children lying close to each other on mats laid on the floor.
A border patrol official expressed a sense of crisis over the increasing number of migrants.
It is said that the mass arrivals were triggered by the Biden administration's decision to overturn his predecessor's immigration policy and to allow unaccompanied minors in the country.
