Yellow sand reaches western Japan

Yellow sand from China's desert regions has reached western Japan.

Japanese weather officials say the phenomenon was observed in the Kyushu, Shikoku and Chugoku regions on Monday. Westerly winds have been getting stronger in these areas.

Visibility has dropped to 6 kilometers in Matsue City, 8 kilometers in Hiroshima City and 9 kilometers in the city of Okayama.

The sand is expected to gradually drift eastward and reach areas between eastern and northern Japan through Tuesday. Visibility is likely to fall below 5 kilometers in some places.

Weather officials are advising drivers to stay on the alert.
