US President Joe Biden announced on Friday that he will nominate the country's ambassador to Vietnam as Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs.
Daniel Kritenbrink is a veteran diplomat who has held multiple key positions related to Asia.
He previously served as the Senior Advisor for North Korea Policy at the Department of State, and was the Senior Director for Asian Affairs at the National Security Council from 2015 to 2017.
Kritenbrink also worked at the US embassies in Tokyo and Beijing, and is fluent in Japanese and Chinese.
If confirmed by Congress, he would work on issues including China and North Korea's nuclear and missile development.
The Biden administration has described the US relationship with China as "the biggest geopolitical test of the 21st century."
