A White House spokesperson says US President Joe Biden has not yet received an invitation to the Tokyo Olympics this summer. The remark came in regard to a comment by Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide that he will invite Biden to attend.
Press Secretary Jen Psaki said at a briefing on Friday that "we understand the careful considerations that the Japanese government and the International Olympic Committee are weighing as they prepare for the Tokyo Olympics this summer."
The press secretary noted the Japanese government has stressed public health remains the central priority.
She added the US government looks forward to welcoming Prime Minister Suga to Washington soon.
Suga is scheduled to visit the US in April. He will be the first foreign leader to hold an in-person summit with Biden since he took office in January.
