Guterres urges 'maximum restraint' in Myanmar

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on Myanmar's military to exercise maximum restraint ahead of its Armed Forces Day ceremony on Saturday.

Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General Farhan Haq said on Wednesday that the UN is following reports of the release of hundreds of demonstrators.

He also said the UN is calling for the release of all those arbitrarily detained, including President Win Myint and State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi.

Haq said the UN is "extremely disturbed" about the killing of a seven-year-old child by security forces in her home on Tuesday. The girl was shot dead in the second-largest city of Mandalay.

The spokesperson said there must be accountability for all the crimes and human rights violations that continue to be perpetrated in Myanmar.
